FOREVER CLAN is coming January 7, 2013

Hi All, just a wee excerpt for FOREVER CLAN being released by Champagne Books 2013:

“I think reading all those vampire romance novels you love so much has addled your brain, Sunday Rose St. Clair. First, it was Grandma Rose and her faeries, and now you and your vampires,” her mother remarked without rancor as she deftly rolled out the piecrust for the fifth pie of the morning. Sunday Rose, in her task of peeling the Macintosh apples lagged behind her mother, earning herself a stern warning glare that plainly told her to hurry it up.

She sighed, “But Ma, to be able to live forever, just imagine!”

Her mother brushed back a wayward strand of still-bright auburn hair that belied her years. She left a streak of flour on her forehead. “You,” she said, “with your Titian hair, your emerald eyes filled with foolish dreams, your books and poetry, are so like Grandma Rose it sometimes frightens me.  She was a last-born child, too, you know. And while some say it’s the middle one who tends to be fey, in this family, I think that’s not so.”

Sunday Rose peeled another fragrant apple, sliced into the large tin basin positioned precariously in her lap. “But, Ma,” she said again. “To live forever? Wouldn’t that be something?”

I think it would be torture. I’ve done enough baking and cleaning and doing for others in this lifetime. I’d not care to continue it indefinitely. Be practical, child.”

Sunday Rose hurried her pace at another warning glance from her mother, but continued to argue. “It’s not a practical matter. It’s about being able to have endless time to live and love and learn and—to just have more.” Yearning filled her voice as she tried to explain how she felt.

“What do you know about love? You’re just a chit of a thing.”
“I know that I’m going to find someone who will love me no matter what--who’ll love me unconditionally.”

Best,
January Bain

2topian view of our planet Earth

Happy Sunday Everyone,

Got a really early start due to the time change so five was really four o'clock in the morning!
THE PERFECT STORM stands at 36,507 at this brief moment in time.

Cullen Goodman, the hero of my work-in-progress, is in the process of telling his parents that he has fallen in love with an Earthling. Horror of Horrors!

Un-edited Excerpt of The Perfect Storm:

“Yes, I’ve fallen in love and married a woman. Lily Stewart to be exact.”

His father closed his eyes for a moment as if gathering himself and for the first time Cullen could see that he had aged. 2topians live far longer than the people of Earth thanks to so many advances in health care, but they were not immortal and could expect to live one hundred and seventy years at best. Every life form on all life-giving planets, of which there were too many to count in the cosmos, had the same curious feature that though they promoted life, they were even better at extinguishing it. And so many had totally extinguished theirs by not getting their act together in time to prevent total alienation. Thank God there was still hope for Earth. But knowing he would very likely live longer on Earth than Lily was not something he was prepared to dwell on. It would be his job to convince her to live on 2topia and avail herself of their advancements. And perhaps the two of them, along with Mathew and Jasmine and others that would band with them in the future could help this population…

“It’s insanity to think that this won’t lead to your undoing, Cullen. Did Tiber not teach you anything?”

“He was a good teacher. Things changed when I met Lily. I saw reason—that it is wrong what we are doing here. And I’m not the only one.”

“Who else, Cullen?”
He looked at his father, wondering how much he should say as his mother came into the room. Eying them both, she sat down on a chair close by and shook her head at Cullen’s offer of a drink.
“I’m fine. Now, what’s been shared between the two of you?”
Your son has fallen in love with a human!”

Lily and Cullen's story

The Perfect Storm

The gentle flow of three hundred year old classical music surrounded Lily as she waited at the entrance of the wedding venue for the march to begin. It would announce her intentions to walk down the aisle to join with Cullen. Her mind had been filled all day with an intense buzzing sensation that heightened her sense of unreality. Then, as the wedding march started and she began her long walk toward her intended she felt a great relief come over her and it was a little like swooning. Above her the stars shone hard and bright and sparks struck off the dark skin of the universe through the vaulted glass ceiling of the conservatory. In this other humbled world she walked on the wings of love toward Cullen, carrying their child in her womb.

*These two lovers are more than star-crossed. They come from different planets! Lily is from Earth and Cullen is from 2topia. Talk about conflict as 2topians are on Earth to exploit humans...

Thanks, Mom!

My personal journey into the awesome realm of writing truly began for me as a child. I thank my dear mother for reading to her brood pretty much nightly for my interest in the written word. In point of fact, I was so excited about discovering how to read I taught myself how to even before my first day of school!
And once I began writing there was no stopping the outpouring of words. I not only write novels, I write about the journey of creating each novel. Words have such power for me! And over me…

To date the journey of storytelling has led me to vampire lairs, to distant planets, to many exotic place right here on Earth and all have definitely increased my pleasure. I usually give my characters the lead, as they off-times know more than me about what they would or would not do! Another advantage of this style of writing is the journey is so fresh that I believe that freshness and passion comes across in the story.
Different species populate my novels. Vampire, Dhampyre, Angel-Fae, Fairies, Dragons, Aliens—all have called my pages home. And all have enriched my life.

So thank you, Mom, for introducing me to stories by reading a chapter-a-night to us. It was the best gift a child could have!

World Building for The Perfect Storm

Welcome to my 2topia:! A planet that has two moons and a highly advanced civilization that will take your breath away...

Excerpt from today's writing:

His mother was pushing to see him but maybe it was for the best. He was thankful his parents’ trip would take a week, even at infinitely faster-than-light speeds that humans have not even dreamt of yet. They would go through the Universal wormhole in Alpha Centauri’s binary star system propped open with superstrings of limitless energy. He saw it in his mind’s eye: the wormhole used by 2topians for easy access to Earth and its rich resources.

From 2topia to Earth was just a week’s travel. The incredible pressure that such high velocities were thought to be created for the body did not happen as expected at that speed as time also speeded up to a superluminal blur. Of course, everyone was backed up with data streams in case of failure to allow cloning in the case of death, though it was not an option Cullen liked to think about as it was too similar to a mind-sweeper experience and he could not imagine for one second wanting Lily to forget any of their time together...

THE PERFECT STORM

Did you ever feel that you were bringing something new to the table with your writing? That many things were converging and creating a perfect storm. That is how I feel right at this moment in time. I’ve hit a place that is well above the earth where different ideas of writing are unfolding in unison and creating a book that is like none I have ever written.

The novel unfolding is more powerful with words and paragraphs and words that I have not strung together before. It’s a love story not wholly of our world, but of a new one created from world building. Two beings have come together, one from planet Earth, one from planet 2topia. Their mating is so intense I can only hang on for the ride. But even more importantly, their offspring will be the salvation of our planet...

The story overrides all genres for me. It’s science fiction, its fantasy, its romance, its intense literature. And I’m bringing to it a freedom that is calling to me. It will definitely be written under a pen name to protect the innocent! And I cannot wait to see how it will end. I’m twenty thousand words in and it’s fully charged with intrigue, romance, the need for salvation, and themes around human issues and healing. I can only hope do it justice. May the word fairies have my back!

)… And do the sins of the human fall on the vampire?

I’ve considered many ethical and moral questions as I write vampires and humans that are juxtaposition, one on the other. Vampires have obviously discovered the proverbial fountain of youth, but how much of their former human characteristics do they bring to their new lives when they are made by a vampire?

These are the things I have imagined during alternative world building I’ve created writing about vampires:

Imagine: having all the time in the world to create medical cures.

Imagine: it being feasible to inoculate all humans against their mortality, a vaccine against death.

Imagine: never dying.

Imagine: saving loved ones.

Imagine: saving people with special gifts: Those who want to do good in the world.

Imagine: watching history being made.

Imagine: accumulating great wealth.

Imagine: flying…vanishing...shapeshifting...

Those are just some of the things I’ve thought about during the journey of writing the Forever Series of books. The best part of writing for me is the realization of how amazing our world truly is. And maybe I just like to twig it a bit to add even more magic! After all, that is the gift of storytelling.

Prologue
The murmur of voices was silenced in an instant by the ancient magistrate’s unearthly cold stare as he stood with full authority, blacked-hooded and paper-white, and read from the book of punishments, his voice heralding the full power of the Condita, the Vampire Establishment.
“It is our character and our will that makes and mars our lives. Your defense that you were not aware of the edict against Human feeding falters as it does not justify the excessive crime of random acts of terror against humans. Modern Vampire lore is clear on this point, as it is written.”
And with a short pause for emphasis, continued his diatribe in the echoing tone of an inhuman mountain of stone. The more astute members of his audience felt an infinitesimal flicker of his savoring the silence before his final pronouncement began.
“Therefore, it is the verdict of this court that the vampyre, Katrianna Ivanski, in absentia, for her crimes against the Condita, be chained for no less than twenty four hours to the punishment polus in the central courtyard of the templum. May the Confuto have mercy on your undead soul.”

Its Hard To Be Human

FOREVER MAN and FOREVER WOMAN are now available from www.ChampagneBooks.com
It is hard to be human which is maybe why I like to immerse myself in imaginative vampire lore. And immerse myself I do. I’ve lived their lives 24/7 as I get the gift of experiencing the richness of this parallel world. Okay, my human life probably suffers for my obsession at times, but fortunately I have a loving, tolerant husband and three independent cats that like to watch me tap away at the computer. I think they find the rhythm of the keystrokes soothing—just my take as I used to like the sound of my grandma’s knitting needles clicking away while I sat beside her. I even used that memory in my third book, Forever Clan, for the heroine’s Scottish ma.
But I digress. Why is it so hard to be human? Well, we cannot heal ourselves as quickly as vampires can. Imagine being healed overnight as you sleep from a wound that would kill a mortal. I’d like that gift! And for those of you that know me well, you can imagine how I would want to share the gift of healing after reading my first novel in the series, Forever Man.

Vampires have it better on the strength side of the equation also. A drink of blood and they are full of energy. And if the blood comes from a blood bank concoction there would be little guilt, I’m just saying…

Vampires can shape-shift at will. Not a bad ability to have. Imagine the havoc one could bring to bullies, child molesters, murderers and other such evil people.

Vampires can live forever. Okay, this sounds good but what about the fact that if you have regrets in life you have to live with them FOREVER. But then maybe vampires (at least the uncivilized ones) don’t carry this guilt. But mine do for the most part, so maybe it’s also hard to be a vampire at times. But they can’t complain too much as they get to live forever, for heaven’s sake!

I hope you follow the journey of my vampires, angels, and Fae that exist in the pages of the Forever Series. Forever Man was released by Champagne Books in July 2012 and Forever Woman on October 1st, with Forever Clan January 2013. I love to hear from readers and writers alike!
Best Wishes,

The Writing of Forever Woman

Writing Forever Woman was the kind of experience I can only wish all humans (and especially writers, of course!) could experience at some special time of their live. I found my full writing voice on this magical journey, discovered the richness of an alternate world, and, I won’t hesitant to say, began to envy vampires!
What’s not to like? You can to stay young and beautiful forever is you get to be made young; you can acquire great wealth with the full gift of time, you can recover easily from wounds that would smite down a human, and maybe best of all, you get to live with the love of your life forever—that is if you can find them!

That has been Christopher St. John’s, the antagonist’s problem in the novel, as he has lost his mate to betrayal and looks to find another. Well, you can’t just take another man’s love! But he tries and all hell breaks loose. Aidan Hightower, our hero, has his hands full trying to save his love, Winter Kennedy from herself as she has invited Christopher, the head of the Pharaoh Clan to make her a vampire. She has a good reason, but she changes her mind, a woman’s prerogative which the alpha vampire does not take kindly to at all!!!

One of the sparks behind Forever Woman was the revelation to me that if you could give the gift of eternal life to someone, why not chose someone worthy of the gift?! And so the characters that pepper my books are special people, saved for good reason. Winter is a gifted medical nurse with a talent for research and that makes her special to the Pharaoh Clan. Other members of the Clan have their historical gifts too and you will need to read, Forever Woman, to find out what they are!

A big thank you to Champagne Books for their belief in me! You do more good than you know.

Excerpt:

“Nice to see you again, Winter.”

The smooth voice of Christopher St. John sucked up all the air in the vehicle. The contrast to the last few days was too much and she was unable to make a connection to any other thought for a few paralyzing seconds. Her brain had shut down, overridden with apprehension and the beginnings of terror.

Finally she found her voice as the vampire appeared in the passenger seat in a blur of hazy movement, dumping her purse on the floor in the process.

“I…I didn’t expect to see you again.”

“Ah, but I am a man, or should I say, a vampire of my word.” His sardonic comment gave her an overwhelmingly queasy feeling.

“Things have changed. I don’t want to be a vampire. I’m getting married tomorrow.” She hated the pleading tone of her voice. She was too stunned by the sudden arrival of the creature and the words spilled out on their own violation.

“Yes, I am aware of your pathetic dabbling with the human. It’s all beneath you. You’re too fine for their world. A beauty like yours comes only once in a thousand years and needs to be preserved for all eternity. That is my quest; that is my service to the Lore.”

“No, no, I’ve changed my mind. I…”

“What you want is not of importance. You are confused—too human. You were meant to call me. As your new-age humans like to profess, nothing happens without a reason. I will help you see the truth and that is my final elucidation on this subject.”

The vampire’s eyes glittered in the lamplight as he placed his hands on each side of her face. She froze once more, her eyes huge, as he bent down and caressed her throat, the vein containing her life’s blood throbbing under the pressure of his cold fingers.

“I thought…I had a choice. That you would know by now that I had changed my mind.”

“Did you really believe that?” His unholy voice was now colored with patronizing overtones. “I gave you too much credit—I thought you were one of the more intelligent women of your species.”

His condescending words enraged Winter and she pulled away violently, only to be trapped in an instant by his inhuman strength as he pulled her close in the claustrophobic confines of the vehicle.

“The pain will only be momentary. Fighting it will only make it worse. Relax, hush, little one.” His voice was mesmerizing as he gathered her close and sunk his lips into her neck. A brief start of intense pain caused Winter to let out a moan and then she felt nothing, thought nothing, as the vampire stole the life force from within her and she lapsed into unconsciousness.

October 1, 2012: FOREVER WOMAN is published!

What if you had an incurable disease? Maybe you too would think that becoming a vampire might be your best bet. Winter Kennedy has moved to Nome looking for vampires only to find Aiden Hightower. She doesn’t expect to fall in love, but fall deeply and passionately in love she does.
This unplanned action gets in the way of her desire to become a vampire and soon she is confused as to what direction her life should take. Can she burden her new found love with the knowledge that she will die within two years, barring a miracle? Watching her dear mother die a horrible death only two years earlier has left a permanent mark on Winter, and is what has driven her to make desperate decisions regarding her own fate.

Adding to this confusion is Ellie Stone’s proposal (Aiden’s married sister) to heal Winter of her fatal disease. Ellie is the real deal. She can heal others at will. However, it leaves her drained and very weak for days after. And her new pregnancy complicates the matter.

The arrival of the vampire that Winter had purposely called up before falling in love, Christopher St John, further complicates her life when he desires her as his new mate. The pressure on Winter is enormous, but after much internal turmoil she chooses Aiden over eternal life.

On the eve of Winter and Aiden’s marriage, Christopher whisks her away to his lair atop a mountain in Alaska where he changes her into a vampire after receiving a special sanction to do so. Devastated by the turn of events and blaming herself for her actions, Winter is lost until she finds solace in discovering cures for human diseases in her new home.

Will Winter make her way back to her beloved Aiden? Read Forever Woman and find out!

Major Theme running through my novels

 First Harvest/ Science Fiction Romance

I have begun to notice a theme running through my books this fall of 2012, whether they are fantasy, horror, paranormal or science fiction. Apparently, living through the life of my characters cavorting in my works, I worry a lot about our planet progressing beyond its present status of using fossil fuels as energy sources which makes us only a Type O on the standard Kardashev scale accepted by most scholars. We need to reach the next tier of the scale for categorizing civilizations to learn to control the weather, or truly manipulate planetary energies. People will need to embrace the big picture if all we hold dear is going to survive.

Well, that’s according to Lily Stewart, my newest heroine who clawed her way up from the having a drug-addicted mother to acquiring a doctorate in anthropology. Her colleagues at the university paint a doom-and-gloom scenario that the planet is heading for disaster in the near future if humans didn’t start pulling together and realizing what’s at stake, not only on an ecological front but also the all-important social wherewithal to settle illiberal differences that had been separating cultures for millennium. When would people realize it was the war between them that could cause Armageddon—internal flaws in human character would most likely be the catalyst, not the insignificant threats from doomsday scenarios proposed by the recent crop of survivalists?

And that realization was not going to happen unless everyone started to pull together, Lily laments in First Harvest. People needed to embrace the big picture if all they held dear was going to survive fifty years past Peak Oil.

What about you? Do you think like Lily? Do you worry about the future of our fellow humans?

SPOTLIGHT: Richard Hatcher and Toxic Relationship

Hi Richard, thanks so much for visiting with me today! I'm so-o looking foward to learning more about your writing journey, so let's get right at it.

1. How long have you been writing? What genres do you write?

First of all, thanks for inviting me to do this interview January. Sounds like you’re having lots of fun with the release of your novel, FOREVER MAN. So, how long have I been writing? I’ve been writing stories since the third grade. I’d bring them to read for show and tell. Over the years I wrote now and then, occasionally pushing a query out the door, but family and work took most of my time and energy. Then about five years ago I realized if I didn’t get on with the writing I’d miss the opportunity. So I started carving out time at night and on weekends. In 2009 I used a move from Austin to Seattle for a major shift to focus much more of my time on writing novels.

In terms of genres, the Nick Sibelius series, which TOXIC RELATIONSHIP is the first, is suspense (but with a sense of humor). I have a sci-fi fantasy that won the Texas Writers League for Sci-fi in 2011, which I will probably pull out again one of these days. And I’m writing a YA fantasy which combines elements of fantasy, speculative and historical fiction.

2. Where do you find your muse for your stories?

Place plays a big role in the development of story ideas for me. TOXIC RELATIONSHIP, rises out of Central Texas, drawing on the land, environment, people, culture, music, food -- all of it.

3. What do you like best about writing?

The total immersion in the world I’m creating. When I’m on my game, I lose track of time. I write in coffee shops quite a bit for the white noise and the energy of the place. It’s not unusual for me to look up and see that five or six hours have passed and my latte is stone cold.

4. What has your journey been like on the road to becoming a published author?

I decided awhile back before being published to start telling people I was a writer. I wanted to own it. But more importantly, I decided I needed to do my art no matter what the market wanted. Some of the greatest artist were unknown in their lifetimes. I think the best writing happens not because there’s a market for a certain kind of story and I’m going to write to it, but because the writing has to happen, whether it gets read by the masses or not. Writers have to write those stories down.

5. Any advice for newbies?

Write, write, write. Be open to feedback and criticism. Write, write, write. Be persistent. Write, write, write. Did I mention write?

6. Who is your favorite character in your novel Toxic Relationship? Why?

I’m torn between two, but I’ll go with Junior. He’s the kind of, as we say in Texas, good old boy, who means well but his actions always seem to lead to a bad end. He’s a likeable felon with a good heart and absolutely no judgement. He provides much of the comic relief for the book.

I’d have to say however, that Nick Sibelius, my protagonist, is my favourite. He’s a tough guy physically, but he definitely has a tender side. His history has been difficult -- his wife cheated on him and a drug dealer killed his police force partner right in front of him -- which has led him to a little plot of land just outside of the city limits of Pflugerville, Texas. He’s a man who would prefer peace and quiet, but keeps finding himself in the vortex of other people’s bad decisions. So he keeps going forward, hoping to create some kind of stability in the midst of chaos.

7. Do you have a favorite author?

I could give you a long list, but when I want to have a fun read, I always enjoy Carl Hiaasen’s novels.

8. What are your writing now?

Champagne Books will be publishing the second Nick Sibelius novel in June, 2013 entitled, DIRTY WATER. So I’ve started work on a third in the series with a tentative title of CHAIN REACTION. I’m also working on a YA fantasy series called INKER WARS. The first book in the series, THE FIVE PENS OF JOHANN is in the draft stage. In addition, I’m writing some short stories.

9. If you could speak to a question you have not been asked yet about your writing what would it be and how would you answer it?

How about if I tell you about TOXIC RELATIONSHIP.

After a murdered partner, a cheating wife and a lost job in Houston, Nick Sibelius sets up a private investigation business in a small Texas town hoping to find some peace and maybe, himself. When a couple disappears and a bass fisherman turns up dead, he finds himself drawn into a web of toxic relationships: MaryLou, a beautiful woman with a mysterious past; Junior, a failed farmer whose best intentions seem to always result in a dead body; Barry, a sociopathic dentist turned illegal toxic waste entrepreneur with visions of grandeur. When the felon who killed his partner in Houston joins forces with Barry, Nick must not only stop the toxic waste dumping while finding his client’s missing daughter, but keep from being killed in the process. In the end, MaryLou’s dark secret will either save him or kill him -- whichever comes first.

Sex, murder and toxic waste. Nowhere else but Texas.

This is my favorite review so far on Amazon: Thanks Gurmeet!!!
There are two main elements in a successful novel. Firstly there is the story, the tale that must be told and secondly there is the author's ability to tell the story. Neither of these strands can stand alone, a poor story cannot be well told by even the most gifted writer and a great story will always suffer at the hands of a scribe who cannot do it justice.

January Bain's Forever Man comes as a surprise then, for a first novel. It is not only a cracking tale but told with style and panache. Romance, yes, and vampire fiction, yes, and both of these genres have suffered their share of brickbats, but this is a highly readable book. It flows smoothly with both believable characters and dialogue in a realistic setting, always the mark of a good writer, and the events are entertaining enough, with ample twists and turns, to keep most readers hooked. This writer promises much and has launched her writing career with a novel that will provide a rewarding reading experience to those who are willing to enter its headily exotic realm.
